The American Dream

Viña del Mar, Chile 2012-01-07

While waiting to board a plane in New York, I overheard the telephone conversation a fellow passenger was having after her visit with her daughter in New York.

According to the conversation, this grandmother was happy to share over the phone (and with the people sitting near by), that her daughter and husband make over $300,000.00 a year, have a nice home and are bringing up a wonderful three-year-old son. The perfect American dream if you ask me.

But just like any other grandmother, she was a bit concerned about her grandson’s odd behavior. There was some crying in the mornings, more crying late at nights, not eating properly… Nevertheless, he was a bundle of joy.

It wasn’t until she said that the child goes to daycare at 7:30 am only to get pick up by her mother after work around 7:00 pm (eats dinner by 10:00 pm and goes to bed by 11:00 pm) that I realized this child spends over 11 and a half hours at a daycare; very sad if you ask me.

My parents didn’t make a lot of money, but they gave me and my siblings a lot more than three hundred thousand dollars a year can buy… their time.

The geatest gift we can share with anyone is our time. How sad that to some ppl, money is more important than family. I don’t think anyone reflects on their deathbed, “I wish I’d spent more time at work.”
