What Kind of Wax?

Francine's batik (red circles) 2012-12-06

Wax is not only used to make candles and polish shoes. I use it in my batik making.

When I first started dabbling with this art form, I used a mixture of bees wax and paraffin. It worked very well in preserving the portions of the fabric I did not want to be further dyed by the following colouring stages.

However, I have recently switched to soy wax. The reason I have switched are twofold. Firstly, soy wax has a lower melting point and I can therefore easily remove it from the finished products with hot tap water and soap as opposed to boiling the fabric or sending it to professional cleaners who use solvents to remove it. Secondly, it is my understanding that the fumes generated by melted soy wax is less toxic than that of paraffin.
