Batik

Francine's batik (red and blue) 2012-11-14

The first time I heard of batik was when I was in grade school.

We had a replacement art teacher for a few months and I must say that this art teacher was memorable. She had blue-black hair that seemed to match a small blue-black butterfly tatooed in one of her palms. This was long before the tatoo craze of the last few decades.

Not only was her look unique, but the art projects she had us engage in were unique. One of my favourite art project was batik – the textile art in which designs are made by way of a dye-resist, most commonly wax. Using successive layers of dyes and wax, textile magic appear.

I have always been fascinated by batik. In fact, my studio has all the equipment necessary for this pursuit because I love to dabble in batik from time to time.
