Even when you are filled with hope for a good outcome, you never really know what will happen when you conduct garden experiments.

In fact, this anticipation is part of the pleasure I get from gardening. While gardening and cultivating are our attempts to control a small ecosystem, time and weather are variables over which we have no control.

Last year, one of my last planting session occurred late in the season. It involved the transplanting of 11 small gooseberry cuttings that I was able to coax into rooting.

After this past winter, I knew I should anticipate the survival rate of these small plants to be impacted by the harshness of the last season. Despite having great hope, I try to be reasonable with my expectations.

Let me tell you that I was very surprised when the 11 small gooseberry plants started sprouting leaves this spring. This made me very, very happy. These are hardy little plants.

But what’s more, soon after the leaves had sprouted, the little plants also started to bloom. These small hardy plants are flowering!

Merci Stefan.
