What A Pile Of Dirt!

DSC_1668 - Version 2

What do you do with a very large pile of dirt?

OK, let’s start from the beginning because I wouldn’t want you to think that I purchased a very large pile of dirt for absolutely no reason or purpose.

When I bought the house, a pile of dirt was left on the south-west corner of the property, a “slight” oversupply from all of the recent renovations and upgrades. I never thought of it at the time, just before winter. “It’s just a pile of dirt” I said to myself. I thought I was going to easily deal with it in the spring.

After the snow melted, I realized that the pile of dirt was very large. I walked all over the property trying to find any depressions that required filling, or any places where I could dissimulate the dirt, but I didn’t find any. What to do?

I walked around some more. I still had no idea what to do.

Then, an idea came to me. What about spreading the pile out, making a circular garden bed out of it? The grass under the pile of dirt was long dead anyway. Yes, perhaps distributing this dirt further was a simple answer but it was going to work. I decided to consider it like sweeping the pile under a rug except the rug would be a garden bed.

This garden may have begun as a practical idea but it produced an attractive display of annuals in no time. That summer, we jokingly referred to this garden as the “municipal garden.”

But that particular version of the garden was only temporary because I had already begun dreaming of what was going to be featured in this garden – lavender. I had to wait until this year to be able to plant my own lavender seedlings.

But the wait was worth it. This pile of dirt is growing up and becoming a nice garden in the end.
