Reality TV

Television show "Calle 7" 2012-11-23

I often watch Chilean television from the comfort of my home here in Montréal.

Technology has opened so many windows; all of the world can now be seen. It’s great. In fact, it would now be hard to imagine no longer having all these windows.

There is a reality television show I often watch called Calle 7. What strikes me are the cultural differences between Chilean and North American television.

In this two-hour reality show, contestants compete in athletic challenges to win the big prize. All the contestants wear matching bathing suits that reveal quite a lot… you know, a bit of playful sex appeal.

There is nothing offensive meant by these skimpy costumes. I also point out that both sexes are displayed equally. But I believe it is cultural differences that explains a youth-oriented show displaying such imagery in the middle of the afternoon.

In the end, the challenges are great; the competition is fierce, and most of all, very entertaining.

I enjoy Calle 7.
