Coffee Time Musings

Bench by coffee shop on Pretoria Avenue, Toronto 2011-02-17

An early morning coffee is always a treat. The wooden bench was perfect for enjoying a hot cup outside the coffee shop on Pretoria Avenue. Despite being small, the first sip of coffee carried a jolt of taste.

While sitting on the bench, the view included “Motel Smug Less” painted on the brick side of the building across the street. It appeared to be somehow related to the nearby graffiti but was intriguing on its own; it was almost like it was a real sign for a motel. What sort of customers would rent a room at such a motel?

A last shot of coffee revealed the bottom of the cup. The few steps to the garbage brought to light an old Fargo truck behind the garage. It was one of those very old trucks from the mid 1960’s. The pale green of its paint was complemented by the pale aqua of the graffiti on the wall behind. Would the owner of an old Fargo truck rent a room at a Motel Smug Less?

This brought to mind the old yellow camping trailer spotted two blocks away in the parking lot of a high rise on Cambridge Avenue. That trailer also looked like it was from the 1960’s as well. Would the camper in the yellow trailer rent a room at a Motel Smug Less? Then again, why would you if you had a spiffy yellow trailer like that.

Interesting city sites – the yellow trailer is not a usual site. Really like the bench with graffiti and how you cropped it.
“Motel Smug Less” sounds… interesting. You are right – it was created like a flashing sign you see on some of the ‘less expensive’ motels.
Thanks for sharing your work Stéfan. It’s always delightful.

    Awesome series!
The pickup and the trailer would go well together.
